IP Acceleration Program for Startups (IPAS)

The Japan Patent Office (JPO) has chosen ten start-up corporations eligible to receive support in order to facilitate the use of their intellectual property, in, as the JPO prefers to call it, a “mentorship” program. The JPO will coordinate separate meetings over a three-month period with these companies in order to determine how to best use (i.e., licensing, collaborations with both domestic and overseas corporations, etc) their existing IP rights to further business and the development of technology and potentially obtain further IP rights. In essence, the JPO will be working with these start-up corporations to develop a domestic and a possible global marketing strategy for each company’s present and potentially future IP.

This is the first round of what is hoped to be a continuing cycle of what is intended to be a successful means of identifying and assisting venture corporations and start-ups which generally have less experience and financial resources necessary to initially promote their IP. A second round of submissions is currently underway with an application closing date of September 1, 2019. It is anticipated that further rounds will be announced in the future.

The first round saw over 60 start-up corporations submit applications for this IPAS mentorship. The 10 corporations selected are listed below and cover a diverse field of research areas including AI, semiconductors, pharmaceutical, medical and nutriceutical research, genome editing, etc.

At present the JPO has created a separate webpage (IPBASE, at present Japanese language only. https://ipbase.go.jp/public/startupxip.php) which will detail the progress of this program and other programs (mentors) which support start-ups and venture corporations. Please contact us at (ariga-foreign@ariga.co.jp) if you require an explanation of the IPBASE webpage.

Ariga will provide updates for each cycle of this program indicating the trends and a list of the selected corporations and their areas of research, in addition to announcements of further rounds during which start-ups and venture corporations wishing to partake in this program may submit applications.
